Hargrave Andrew Library (HAL) in Monash University provides scholarly collections for the fields of STEM, study facilities, and research skills development programs to strengthen the learning, teaching and research activities of staff and students. HAL wanted a promotional video for the library’s space, services and resources to new students, to be posted on the official Monash University youtube channel of 27.5K subscribers.

Our concept solution was to present a friendly student guiding the viewer through the library as a tour, emphasising friendship and a hint of romance. We highlighted characteristics unique to the library which are the maps and artefacts section. Our intention was to inform students in the demanding field of STEM that the library empowers them to be experts and ambitious, while enjoying the little things in life.

Our video proposal was selected by the client to be the best within the competing teams because of its natural, inviting storytelling and positive energy.

The video development and scripting were based on the insights from our target audience research. New students like to hear from senior students, so feedback from our interviews and surveys of existing students about their library experiences indicated that students want to find a study space that helps them to focus and take breaks to get the best grades. Therefore our video displays the range of study options from quiet to discussion rooms and artwork/maps that offer breaks that inspire.

Academic and social life are both important to students, so a new student must resonate with the friendly and supportive vibe of the library. Monash University slogans "I am still learning" and its libraries slogan "Love your library" are reflected in our concept. Our solution thus incorporated illustrated motion graphics that are colourful, fun and engaging with goofy scenes, romantic montages of book collections and hustling-bustling study spaces.
